Welcome to Modified Driving Solutions
Comprehensive & Effective Occupational Therapy Driving Medical Assessments
For many people, driving is a valuable and essential skill in their lives. It allows them to stay connected with others, participate within their communities and complete meaningful daily activities. It enables people to attend work, social outings, and necessary appointments and engage with their friends and family. However, when a person’s health becomes compromised, their medical condition may decrease their ability to operate a vehicle safely and to legal standards. A driving medical assessment may be appropriate for the person.

Why You Need a Professional to Assess Your ‘Fitness to Drive’?
Driving is a skill that people often take for granted, and people may not realise the big responsibility involved in maintaining the safety of our roads. In NSW, when a person’s medical condition may possibly affect their traveling capacity, the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) must be notified of the change to their medical situation. A driver’s medical exam may then be required.
Perhaps unbeknownst to many, it is primarily the motorist’s responsibility to notify the RMS of any change to their medical or health status. Medical conditions can range from physical disabilities such as weakness in a limb or limb amputations to cognitive conditions such as autism, intellectual disability or dementia. Stroke, which may result in physical and cognitive complications for the person, is another condition that requires RMS notification. Because many motorists are often unaware of their responsibility to advise the RMS of their health condition, the person’s doctor commonly lets the RMS know of the medical concern by completing the RMS ‘medical fitness to drive’ form.
On this form, the doctor completes a medical assessment of the person’s overall health status. If the doctor determines it is necessary, the motorist may be required to undergo an Occupational Therapy (OT) medical driving assessment. The aim of this assessment is to determine how the person’s health or disability may be affecting their capacity to operate a vehicle safely and to RMS standards. The medical driving assessment may then recommend a rehabilitation plan to help the person get back on the road safely. The doctor may refer the person to a particular driver medical or OT service.
