If you hold a commercial or heavy vehicle licence and have a medical condition, you may be required to complete an OT driving assessment to ensure your driving safely

Who needs a Heavy Vehicle Driving Assessment?

If you have a medical condition or sustained an injury that may impact on your driving, and hold any licence class below, you may require a Occupational Therapy Heavey Vehicle Driving Assessment

  • Light Rigid (LR)

  • Medium Rigid (MR)

  • Heavey Rigid (HR)

  • Heavey Combination (HC)

  • Multi Combination (MC)

Medical Assessment

Commercial licence holders are required to complete medical forms every 5 years, regardless of their medical status. The RMS may require an assessment for the following medical conditions:

  • Limb Amputations

  • Brain Injury

  • Cardiac Disease

  • Stroke

  • Neurological Disorders

  • Cognitive Conditions e.g., Dementia

  • Mental Health Conditions

The OT Driving Assessment Process

The heavy vehicle assessment involves:

  • 1

    Off-road assessment with the OT doing a visual, cognitive and physical pre driving screen

  • 2

    Driving assessment with the OT and heavy vehicle assessor in a vehicle of your licence class You will drive for 1-2 hours

  • 3

    Feedback, report and notification to RMS

  • 4

    If you successfully pass the assessment, you will maintain your heavy vehicle licence. An unsuccessful result may lead to a licence downgrade, or you may have to retake the assessment.
