FAQ

Yes, a diagnosis of autism or intellectual disability does not mean you cannot learn to drive, and many people with these conditions successfully obtain their licence.

However, depending on the severity of the condition and its likely impact on driving, you may need to declare your condition to RMS. For NDIS participants who want to apply for NDIS-funded supports (e.g. driving lessons), your OT is obligated to make this notification.

The NDIS may fund driving lessons if your driving capacity is affected by your disability. “Specialised driver training” is the specific funding category that may be approved following an OT driving assessment.

The purpose of the OT driving assessment is to determine how many lessons are reasonable and necessary to support a participant with their driving goals. The RMS must also be given a copy of the report.

If you fail an OT driving assessment, the OT may recommend restrictions on your licence (e.g. only drive with a driving instructor) and develop a driving rehabilitation program. Often, an OT driving reassessment is necessary to determine if you are medically suitable to continue to hold a licence.
