When it comes to driving, independence goes hand in hand with safety. For individuals with disabilities or medical issues, achieving this balance can be quite complicated.

Functional driving evaluations conducted by qualified Occupational Therapists (OTs) are essential in these situations. These evaluations are not just assessments; they can foster empowerment and safety as well as promote quality of life.

The following guide will explore how functional driving evaluations can make driving a reality for people with disabilities. We’ll also provide insight into accessing driving supports through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Understanding Functional Driving Evaluations

When there are concerns that a medical condition or disability may influence someone’s driving capacity, a functional driving evaluation (commonly known as an OT driving assessment) is often recommended.

Usually, this is requested by the person’s doctor or Transport for NSW. For aspiring or learner drivers, the NDIS also requires this evaluation if the participant wants to apply for funding for driving lessons.

A functional driving evaluation is an assessment conducted by trained professionals to determine a person’s ability to drive to legal standards as it relates to their medical issue. It examines various competencies, such as physical abilities, cognitive skills, and visual acuity, all of which are essential for safe driving.

At Modified Driving, we offer OT driving assessments, including a medical evaluation and off-road and on-road assessment, making sure you’re ready for the road ahead.

Who Benefits from These Evaluations?

Functional driving evaluations are invaluable for a wide range of individuals. People with physical disabilities, cognitive impairments and visual challenges can benefit significantly.

Caregivers and NDIS participants can also gain insights into how these evaluations can support safety and independence for their loved ones or clients. After an assessment is completed, the OT will develop a bespoke driving program to help the person enhance their driving skills and mitigate any difficulties due to their disability.

The Role of Occupational Therapists in Functional Driving Evaluations

Occupational Therapists are at the heart of functional driving evaluations. Their expertise ensures that the evaluations are thorough, accurate, and supportive of the individual’s needs. In essence, the OT’s role is to try to determine whether a person’s medical condition is impinging on their driving capacity.

If there are difficulties associated with the medical issue, the OT can recommend strategies to overcome them. Recommendations usually come in the form of specialised driving lessons and/or prescribing vehicle modifications. Ultimately, the aim is to best prepare the person to undertake the Transport for NSW driving test

Qualifications of an OT

Occupational therapists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and are members of OT Australia (OTAUS). Driver trained OTs, on top of their degree in Occupational Therapy, need to be trained as a therapist for a couple of years. It is optional but these OTs should complete a post-graduate degree, to help them have the expertise to determine whether a person is fit to drive based on the assessment.

The Evaluation Process

The evaluation process begins with an initial assessment, where the OT gathers information about the individual’s medical history, driving experience, and specific challenges. This is followed by clinical tests to assess physical abilities, vision, and cognitive functions.

Finally, an on-road driving assessment provides real-world insights into the individual’s driving capabilities. The driving component is completed with a qualified driving instructor in a dual-control vehicle.

Recommendations and Support

Based on the evaluation findings, OTs make recommendations tailored to the individual’s needs. This may include suggesting adaptive equipment, recommending further driving lessons, or advising on alternative transportation options. The goal is to empower individuals to drive safely and confidently. The report is also sent to Transport for NSW.

Benefits of Functional Driving Evaluations

The advantages of functional driving evaluations extend beyond the individual, as these assessments also advance safer roads. For the individual, they are an integral part of enhancing their overall quality of life, as driving enables great opportunities to explore personal, social, employment, educational or vocational interests.

Support through the NDIS

Functional driving evaluations play a pivotal role in accessing funding through the NDIS for vehicle modifications and adaptive equipment. Whether the NDIS participant hopes to apply for specialised driver training or vehicle modifications, the NDIS requires a driving assessment by a qualified OT. The NDIS also require the OT to complete an assistive technology (AT) report if the participant wishes to apply for funding in this area.

Real-Life Stories

Functional driving evaluations have transformed the lives of many individuals, offering them newfound freedom and improved well-being. Let’s see below.

Sarah’s Stories

Consider Sarah, a young woman with cerebral palsy who dreamt of driving. With the help of an OT evaluation, she was able to access adaptive driving equipment through the NDIS and obtain her driver’s licence. Today, Sarah drives regularly to access her community, see family and friends and attend her appointments.

David Takes Back His Independence

David suffered a stroke that forced him to cease driving for 3 years. After a long recovery, he worked with his driver trained OT and driving instructor to regain his licence. He has been able to return to work, restoring his functioning to its pre-stroke state.

Modified Driving – Empowerment Through Safe Driving

Functional driving evaluations by OTs are more than just assessments—they are keys to self-reliance and safety and enable those with medical difficulties to fulfil everyday tasks and work towards their goals.

By understanding the role of OTs, navigating the NDIS, and exploring real-life success stories, we can appreciate the profound impact of these driving evaluations.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a functional driving evaluation, consider reaching out to a qualified OT.
